Chime is an online bank based out of San Francisco (and now with branches in Oregon and Washington). This is different from the generally used online payment system. Multiplied wondering whether Chime works with the Cash app if you are limited to only one of the benefits. They provide:
- Free unlimited debit cards.
- Free bill pay (including the ability to set up auto-pay for bills).
- No monthly fees.
They also allow you to take cash out of an ATM without fees (although your bank may charge you). Many other banks offer this same service, but Chime is unique in that it does not require any minimum balances, and it is free.
When Chime was first released in 2014, I signed up for an account and deposited $100 to try it out. They allowed me to transfer money from my Bank of America checking account (without any fees). This made the service free for me. Since then, I have been transferring $50 from my Bank of America account to Chime. This way, I am never charged any fees.
For example, if I wanted to transfer $60 into Chime, I would transfer the complete $100 out of my checking account into Chime at once. Then, when it clears in about 5-7 days (depending on the day of the week), I would log into my Chime account and transfer $60 out of my checking account at once. That $60 will be pending for ~ five days. Then, when those 60$ come available, I would withdraw all 60$ to a cash app card (more info about this later).
After doing this process a couple of times, I could transfer all of my money out of Bank of America. My only regret is not transferring my cash out sooner.
You may be thinking that this process takes too long. If you are in a time-sensitive situation, then yes, this method will take longer than something like PayPal-to-PayPal or Venmo-to-Venmo. However, if you are trying to avoid fees and want a manner that is almost as quick as using your debit card for purchases… this process will save you an immense amount of money.
I have consolidated all of my transactions into Chime, so I only have one account to keep track of instead of multiple. Also, Chime allows you to set up text alerts for when money comes in and goes out of your account (say if you get paid or someone owes you $20).
Important Note about chime to cash app
(Please note that this will not work with all banks. I have done this process with both Bank of America and Wells Fargo in the past. It is possible that Wells Fargo would not allow this process.)
The Chime cash app is also great. You can deposit checks from the app by taking a photo of the front and back of the assessment, which often gets deposited within hours. The cash-out feature works just fine as well. I have never had any trouble getting my money when I need it using the app.
You may think you do not have an extra $100 laying around to deposit into Chime to get started. You can try to sell unwanted gift cards on eBay, Craigslist, or Reddit (local subreddits for your area). Or you can use a site like GiftCardGranny to compare the prices of different gift card resellers. Try to find the best cards and buy them at a discounted price. Then, sell those gift cards for cash on one of the three sites as mentioned above. Use that money you made from selling your unwanted gift card(s) to put into Chime!
If you take this advice, please let me know how it goes for you in the comments below! Also, I would love to hear what you think about my process. Do you have a similar method? If not, will you try this out now? Let me know in the comments below!
(Note: if your bank does not allow transfers in/out of Chime, then obviously, this will not work for you.)
If anyone wants to provide me with their Chime details (username and email address), I will let you know if the cash-out process is working for me or not. I do withdraw all of my money at once, so it may go through in one day!
I only have the $100 deposit allowed by Bank of America per month, so this will not work with most banks. This is because of the Bank of America’s “Daily Limit Control” in place. If you do not have Daily Limit Control or any limit set, this advice will probably work for you.)
So even if I have to spend a few days just transferring money back and forth between Chime and my checking account, I can avoid the $5 ATM fee every time I use my card.
